Switching the position of the neck cut has the potential to greatly improve animal welfare
Two major welfare problems can occur during slaughter without stunning. They are a prolonged period where the bovine remains sensible and aspiration of blood into the trachea (windpipe) and respiratory tract. Blood entering the respiratory tract is a welfare concern because the sensation caused by blood entering the respiratory system is likely to be very distressful.
Observations and research done by Neville Gregory, Ph.D., from Bristol Univ. in the UK, and other researchers indicates that cutting cattle close to the jawbone will eliminate the transmission of “potentially unpleasant sensory signals associated with blood contaminating the upper and lower respiratory tract.” When the cut is made close to the jawbone in the C1 (Cervical 1) position, the sensory nerve to the respiratory tract is severed. However, most Halal and Kosher cuts are made further away from the jaw in the C2 to C4 position. In this position, the sensory nerve remains intact and distressful sensations could be transmitted to the brain before the animal loses sensibility. These research findings were presented by Gregory at the Centenary International Symposium held in Portsmouth, England. This conference was hosted by the Humane Slaughter Association.
Cutting in the C1 position close to the jaw will also help prevent prolonged periods of sensibility caused by sealing off of the artery ends. Approximately 3 percent to 5 percent of the cattle have delayed onset of insensibility, according to Gregory. This small percentage is similar to observations I have made in plants that have expert Kosher slaughter. Most cattle that have delayed onset of insensibility will have occluded arteries caused by false aneurysms. Cutting close to the jawbone in the C1 position greatly reduces the formation of false aneurysms. When cattle were cut in the C1 position, only 1 percent of the arteries were occluded. When they were cut in the C3 position, which is further away from the jaw, one-third of the cattle had false aneurysms. Switching the position of the cut to the C1 position has the potential to greatly improve animal welfare.
Some Halal slaughter is already being performed by cutting close to the jawbone. In Halal, cutting in the C1 position is strongly recommended. For Kosher slaughter, the knife is not permitted to touch the jawbone. Research is needed to determine if Kosher cuts that are ritually correct will reliably sever the nerve to prevent distressful sensations from aspirated blood from being perceived by the cattle. Gregory concluded, “changing to a cut at C1 could partly reduce the potential for suffering during slaughter without stunning.”
Differences in anatomy
The problems discussed in this article mainly occur in cattle. Due to differences in anatomy, sheep and goats bleed out more quickly than cattle. Gregory also found that sealing off of the artery ends does not occur in sheep and goats. Numerous researchers have documented that cattle lose sensibility within 17 to 85 seconds. Insensibility can be prolonged if the arteries get sealed off. Sheep become unconscious in two to 14 seconds. These new findings on the advantages of cutting in the C1 position have the potential to improve animal welfare when slaughter is performed without stunning.

Steamed with chilli and garlic, the tilapia fish makes for a delicious meal, but a Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) researcher has discovered that the spiny-finned freshwater fish is a rich source of collagen.
The discovery offers consumers a Halal alternative for the important protein, which is traditionally obtained from pigs and cows.
The collagen was discovered by UPM Faculty of Food and Science Technology lecturer and researcher Prof Dr Jamilah Bakar.
She then introduced it to biotech company Bionic Lifesciences, which included the ingredient in its bird’s nest product.
The improved final product was displayed at the Biomalaysia 2011 Conference and Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur recently. Bionic Lifesciences director Prof Mohd Saleh Yahya and UPM deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Mohd Saleh Jaafar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to seal the collaboration between the company and varsity to commercialise the product.
Prof Mohd Saleh said UPM’s objective for the collaboration is to enhance research and development for the biotechnological processes.
“This collaboration will help to provide technical assistance and knowledge and will be beneficial for UPM students to further their research on collagen,” he said.
Prof Jamilah shared that she had spent 12 years on the research.
“I actually started my research with gelatine which is used in almost all the food products and from there, I discovered that gelatine is obtained from collagen by hydrolysis,” she said.
“Collagen is used widely in the food industry as a food supplement in capsule, beverage and tablet forms.
 “Society is starting to realise the importance of collagen in maintaining skin health, improving immunity, activating muscles and treating joint pain,” she said.
She added that prior to this; collagen had to be imported from China and Korea as there was no local source.
“We are the first in the region to produce Halal aquatic collagen.
“The cosmetics industry can use it for its anti-ageing properties and include it into facemasks, hair products, nail products, creams and even directly into beverages because it is Halal,” she added.

MALAYSIA: JAKIM Has No Plans to Announce Non-compliant Premises

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has no plans to announce the list of business premises that failed the Non-Compliance Report (NCR) of the Malaysian Halal Certification.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said the decision was made to avoid misunderstanding on the Halal status of a particular building.
"The NCR is issued after JAKIM has carried out an inspection and finds that the premises concerned does not comply with conditions specified such as the employees do not wear gloves or aprons, unhygienic and so on," she told the Senate.
She said this when replying to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Mohammed Najeeb Abdullah who wanted to know whether JAKIM would issue the list of premises that failed the NCR.

Hati-hati Melayari Internet



SERINGKALI kita melihat pautan-pautan di laman web atau video yang menggunakan imej-imej seksi ketika melayari laman sosial kegemaran seperti Facebook. Ayat-ayat yang digunakan pula berbaur seks dan sangat jelas untuk difahami bagi menambahkan lagi keinginan seseorang untuk melihatnya.

Terdorong oleh nafsu, butang diklik tetapi tiada apa yang berlaku. Sebenarnya tanpa disedari, anda telah diserang dengan aktiviti phishing. Phishing adalah cubaan untuk mendapatkan maklumat sensitif pengguna yang dimasukkan ke dalam komputer peribadi tanpa disedari.

Aktiviti tersebut semakin kerap dapat dilihat di laman-laman sosial sejajar dengan kenaikan kadar penembusan Internet terutama laman sosial di Malaysia. Menurut syarikat yang menjalankan kajian pemasaran Internet, comScore, Malaysia adalah negara kedua paling tinggi aktiviti penembusan rangkaian sosial di Asia Tenggara iaitu sebanyak 91 peratus selepas Filipina.

Tambahan pula, menurut Peneraju Perniagaan Norton rantau Asia Selatan, Symantec, Effendy Ibrahim, Laporan Jenayah Siber Norton 2010 menemui 65 peratus pengguna internet di Malaysia tidak meletakkan seting akaun laman sosial mereka kepada tahap paling tinggi.

“Ia menjadikan informasi lebih mudah dilihat pada bila-bila masa. Selain itu, kajian turut menemui kebanyakan penjenayah siber menggunakan laman sosial sebagai tempat menghantar link ringkas ke laman web yang berniat jahat,” ulasnya lagi.

Link-link ringkas itu dianggap berniat jahat kerana ia akan membawa pelayar Internet ke laman web yang berbeza seperti dipaparkan, manakala destinasi sebenar link tersebut disembunyikan daripada pengetahuan pelayar Internet. Kebanyakan link tersebut menggunakan paparan dan imej yang seksi bagi menarik pelayar Internet supaya mengklik link ringkas tersebut.

Tambah Effendy, dalam tempoh masa tiga bulan pada tahun 2010, dua pertiga link-link jahat itu berada dalam paparan News Feed laman sosial, manakala 73 peratus daripadanya telah diklik sebanyak 11 kali atau lebih. “Ia membuktikan penggunaan link-link yang dipos itu sangat efektif,” ujarnya ringkas.

Sehingga bulan Mac 2011, kata Effendy, CyberSecurity Malaysia telah mengenalpasti sekurang-kurang 900 laman phishing yang menyasarkan kepada institusi kewangan. Tujuannya adalah untuk mendapatkan maklumat perbankan dan laporan mendapati secara purata sebanyak 260,000 identiti telah didedahkan pada tahun 2010.

Dakwa Effendy lagi, dalam pemerhatian mereka, informasi kad kredit yang berharga itu didagangkan di pasaran gelap online pada harga serendah 30 sen perdata sahaja. Jenayah siber secara dalam talian akan meningkat setiap tahun dan sukar dihapuskan sama sekali. Symantec telah mengesan sebanyak 286 juta ancaman baru pada tahun 2010. Ia bersamaan sembilan ancaman baru untuk setiap saat sepanjang tahun.

Sementara itu, Setiausaha Persatuan Pembekal Kandungan Mudah Alih Malaysia (MMCP), Johary Mustapha, 33, berkata, terdapat dua jenis link yang sering dipapar dalam laman sosial atau sesawang seseorang itu. “Kedua-duanya bersifat mengelirukan dengan paparan wanita seksi atau berbentuk soalan kuiz tetapi berbeza tahap bahaya. Salah satunya adalah semata-mata bertujuan untuk pengiklanan sahaja. Ia dapat dikesan apabila arahan akhir yang diberi adalah memasukkan nombor telefon sebagai pengesahan,” ulasnya ketika dihubungi Infiniti baru-baru ini.

Menurut Johary, pautan itu dilakukan oleh syarikat-syarikat yang dianggap sebagai kreatif memanipulasi orang ramai supaya melawat laman web mereka. Tambahnya, link sebegitu tidak akan merosakkan atau mendatangkan bahaya kepada pengguna jika ditekan berbanding dengan jenis pautan yang lagi satu.

Pautan kedua dianggap merbahaya kerana ia menyebabkan gangguan Adware walaupun masih menggunakan teknik yang sama sebagai tarikan. Link tersebut boleh dikesan apabila setiap kali pelayar Internet menekan butang pautan untuk menonton video atau sebagainya tetapi, tiada apa yang berlaku.

Malah, dalam sesetengah pautan, ia mengkehendaki pengguna memuat naik perisian atau fail dengan alasan jika menonton video akan menjadi lebih cepat. “Serangan Adware sangat berbeza dengan virus, ia tidak akan memberi kesan kepada komputer atau telefon bimbit tetapi, berkemampuan mengumpul semua data yang pengguna masukkan,” katanya.

Data-data seperti kata laluan untuk Log In laman sosial, kata kunci, nombor akaun bank yang lebih dikenali sebagai Cookies boleh dikumpul dan dihantar kepada individu yang mencipta link tersebut. Ujar Johary lagi, pengguna dinasihat supaya berhati-hati dengan arahan memuat naik fail yang mempunyai nama domain .exe dan .bat kerana apabila sesuatu perisian secara tidak sengaja dipasang, pengambilan data menjadi lebih mudah. “Serangan Adware boleh dikesan apabila setiap kali laman web dibuka, amaran Pop-up akan muncul,” ulasnya lagi.

Bagaimanapun, Johary menambah bagi perbankan internet, tahap keselamatannya tinggi hingga ke tahap dua atau tiga seperti memerlukan pengguna membuat pengesahan melalui telefon bimbit.

MALAYSIA: Doubletree by Hilton KL Gets Halal Cert from Jakim

DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur has received Halal certification for its Makan Kitchen restaurant and banquet kitchens.
The Islamic Development Department Malaysia (JAKIM) awarded the certification after an on-site inspection, evaluation and recommendation on Halal compliance.
DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur General Manager Ian Barrow said: "The certification is a form of social obligation and will help to boost the trust and confidence of our Muslim guests while dining with us.
"This initiative also benefits all guests as it covers not only religious requirements but also encourages strict hygiene practices and food safety," he said in a statement today.

ISLAMIC METHOD OF SLAUGHTERING AN ANIMAL


Research: Islamic Slaughtering and Western method of Slaughtering.
Let’s begin with a small introduction with the term HALAAL
What is Halaal ( ﻝﻼﺣ )?
Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. The opposite of halal is HARAAM (ﻡﺍﺮﺣ ), which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to allfacets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials.
While many things are clearly halal or haram, there are some things which are not clear. Further information is needed to categorize them as halal or haram. Such items are often referred to asmashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable.
All foods are considered halal except the following (which are haram):
Swine/Pork and its by-products – Read more on WHY PORK IS PROHIBITED
Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering
Alcoholic drinks and intoxicants Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and certain other animals Foods contaminated with any of the above products,
Foods containing ingredients such as gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers, and flavors are questionable (mashbooh), because the origin of the seingredients is not known.
Let’s now move into the topic.
The Islamic practice of slaughtering animals by means of a sharp cut to the front of the neck has frequently come under attack by some animal rights activists as being a form of animal cruelty, the claim being that it is a painful in human method of killing animals. In the West, it is required by law to stun the animals with a shot to the head before the slaughter, supposedly to render the animal unconscious and to prevent it from reviving before it is killed so as not to slow down the movement of the processing line. It is also used toprevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies.

It therefore may come as a surprise to those who have made such acclimations to learn of the results of a study carried out by Professor Wilhelm Schulzeand his colleague Dr. Hazim at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover University in Germany. The study: ‘Attempts to Objectify Pain and Consciousness in Conventional (captive boltpistol stunning) and Ritual (halal, knife) Methods of Slaughtering Sheep and Calves’ concludes that Islamic slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter and that captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes severe pain to the animal.
In the study, several electrodes were surgicallyimplanted at various points of the skull of allanimals, touching the surface of the brain. Theanimals were allowed to recover for several weeks. Some animals were then slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and thecarotid arteries as well as the trachea andesophagus (Islamic method). Other animals werestunned using a Captive Bolt Pistol (CBP). During the experiment, an electroencephal ograph (EEG) and anelectrocardiogram (ECG) recorded the condition of the brain and the heart of all animals during the course of slaughter and stunning.
The results were as follows:
I – Islamic Method When you slaughter in Islamic way the blood is drained from the flesh, where as other method ofkilling clots the blood and 45 percent of the blood remains in the flesh, hence eating such meat is highly dagerous to health, especially kids.
1. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter, thus indicating that the animal did not feel any painduring or immediately after the incision.
2. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded acondition of deep sleep – unconsciousness. This is due to the large quantity of blood gushing out from the body.
3. After the above-mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain atall.
4. As the brain message (EEG) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (A reflex action of the spinal cord) driving a maximum amount of blood from the body thus resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer.

"Tahukah anda bahawa terdapat satu gaya hidup yang telah terbukti mampu memanjangkan usia bagi sesiapa yang mengamalkannya?

Di suatu tempat yang terpencil di Jepun, Okinawa, terdapat suatu gaya hidup yang menjadikan kebanyakan penduduknya kekal aktif sehingga usia 70an, 80an, 90an dan bahkan 100 tahun. Mereka mempunyai pesakit jantung, kanser dan strok yang amat kurang. Kajian selama 25 tahun membuktikan bahawa fenomena panjang usia ini berkait rapat dengan gaya pemakanan mereka dan persekitaran kehidupan mereka.

Diet tradisi masyarakat Okinawa mengandungi kandungan susu soya dan sayur-sayuran yang tinggi dan mengurangkan pengambilan daging serta lemak tepu. Ini bermakna, kita akan dapati para sentenari (centenarian = seratus tahun) banyak memakan soya berbanding burger, keju dan kentang goreng. Kandungan sayur-sayuran yang banyak di dalam diet harian mereka yang terdiri dari bijirin dan kurangnya pengambilan lemak bermakna kurangnya penyumbatan dan penyempitan salur darah. Inilah punca utama penduduk di Okinawa kurang masalah penyakit jantung. Warga tua di tempat lain menjalani kehidupan yang sangat pasif dan kurang menjalani aktiviti riadah tetapi warga tua di Okinawa menjalani kehidupan yang sangat aktif. Berjalan, berkebun, menari tarian rakyat dan seni pertahankan diri membantu mengekalkan sistem kardiovaskular serta membantu menguatkan tulang dan otot.

Purata jangka hayat wanita di Okinawa adalah 87 tahun sementara lelakinya pula adalah 78 tahun. Peratus umur melebihi 100 tahun adalah 40 per 100,000 orang. Kajian bermula dari tahun 1976 ke atas 600 penduduk Okinawa yang mencapai usia 100 tahun membongkar rahsia panjang usia mereka.

Makanan Yang Hampir Kepada Vegetarian

Jika anda pengamal makanan yang tinggi protein dan lemak, anda pasti tidak berminat membaca seterusnya. Masyarakat yang panjang usia kesemuanya VEGETARIAN. Mereka memakan lebih dari 7 hidangan sayur-sayuran sehari, lebih dari 7 hidangan bijirin, lebih dari 7 hidangan buah-buahan, sedikit ikan dan sangat kurang memakan daging dan telur. Mereka tidak mengambil hasil tenusu tetapi amat kurang dari mereka mengidap osteoporosis.

Kesimpulannya, diet penduduk Okinawa adalah tinggi kandungan serat.

Kurang Makan

Motto paling popular mereka adalah “Hari Haci Bu” iaitu “Berhenti Makan Apabila Anda 80% Kenyang”. Ini bertepatan dengan saranan Rasulullah iaitu makanlah sebelum kamu lapar dan berhentilah sebelum kamu kenyang. Obesiti hampir tidak wujud di Okinawa.

Banyakkan Minum Air dan Teh

Penduduk Okinawa minum 12 gelas air sehari termasuk teh hijau. Minum separuh dari berat anda dalam auns setiap hari. Contohnya, jika berat anda 150 paun, minum sekurang-kurangnya 75 auns air bertapis setiap hari.

Kehidupan Yang Bebas Dari Stress

Penduduk Okinawa tidak berasa runsing dan gaya hidup yang mempunyai tekanan hidup atau stress yang rendah. Tiada perkara yang perlu digesa, tiada perkara yang dibimbangi dan hidup mengikut alam semulajadi. Mereka gemar bermeditasi, hidup yang simple, aman tenteram dan sentiasa berpandangan positif.

Tanah di Okinawa

Tanah di Okinawa adalah sangat subur. Tanah yang subur menyumbang kepada tanam-tanaman dan hasil pertanian yang bersih dan segar. Tiada penggunaan racun dan baja kimia yang merosakkan struktur biologi tanah. Kajian Tuft’s Universiti menunjukkan sayur dan buah-buahan organic mengandungi lebih 87% vitamin dan mineral berbanding hasil bukan organik.

Kajian Panjang Usia di Okinawa (KPUO) oleh Dr Suzuki, Pengarah Kumpulan Penyiasat Usia Panjang Okinawa mendapati mereka yang panjang usia di Okinawa memiliki tubuh yang ramping, wajah yang muda, bertenaga dan kadar penyakit jantung dan kanser yang rendah. Di dalam tahun 1995, jangka hayat penduduk Okinawa melepasi had usia di keseluruhan Jepun.
